Photos Updated November 2015
I used to have zero willpower when I passed the magazine stands at the grocery store. All of those beautiful covers, calling out to me. But in the last year, I’ve become a lot more, well – stringent – with my budget. And I’ve learned to close my eyes when I am checking out.
But a little while back, one called out to me. I actually saw this issue of Family Circle and flipped through the pages, drawn in by the “40+ Pages of Great Fall Meals” headline. I actually was a good girl and put the magazine back that first time. But the next time I went to the grocery store, I actually had the magazine on my grocery list!!
I will totally admit that I am a comfort food addict. And I’m all over a good casserole. I think that’s why this issue really called out to me. I can’t wait to try out lots of the recipes! But first up was this Broccoli, Ham and Cheddar Strata. I was still trying to use up our Christmas ham (hello – I can’t believe how many meals we’ve had from 1 ham!) This recipe seemed perfect. And do you remember the bread I posted about on Tuesday? This is the reason I made it. And it was perfect for it.
This strata recipe was everything I was looking for. Comforting, filling and full of flavor. It does make a massive amount of food, but luckily the leftovers were great as well!

This recipe was so nice, especially since it had broccoli and ham. Question – the top was really ‘crusty’ after it baked. Should I have covered it in foil for half of the baking time? The recipe actually didn’t tell you to cover the strata. Thank you.
Deborah says
The cheese will get a little crispy on top, but if you want to avoid that, you can bake the strata covered with foil and then take it off the last 10-ish minutes.

My mother made this broccoli & ham strata for us for supper when we were kids. She used whatever type bread she had available, and she cut circles out of sliced bread with a cookie cutter, then tore up the crusts and scraps to go into the casserole. The circles were placed on the top of the casserole.

That looks really great! I do browse those magazines at the grocery check out — but have yet to purchase one 🙂 They do spark my creativity.

Strata is one of my favorite breakfast comfort foods, but I've only ever made sweet versions. I MUST give this a try next time I'm in the mood for something savory. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe, Deborah.

There is something about ham and broccoli that always makes me smile. I love casseroles too, and these are some of my favorite ingredients to put in them. I have also been trying to avoid those magazines. They are SO TEMPTING! Thanks for sharing, sweet friend! Have a terrific Thursday.

I love a good caserole, feeds me all week. Do you think those food magazines are getting pricier? I swear they cost like 7 dollars a mag now!
This looks great

I need to wear one of those eye masks whenever I go to the supermarket for fear that I'll try to purchase every food magazine in sight! This one sounds like a winner though. Nothing like a good strata if you want my opinion!
Megan says
I love that the magazine mae it to your shopping list. Sometimes I'll pass up an impulse buy to see if I it sticks in my mind. If it sticks, I go back. Then it's not an impulse! 🙂
Now I want breakfast for dinner.
Thumbs up!
