The other day, my daughter asked me what my favorite season was. I always say spring or fall – the mild temperatures always make me happy – but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I really love summer a lot, as well. Sure, it sometimes gets a bit hot, but the relaxed schedules, the summer evenings – and of course, all of the summer produce – they always get to me.
And of course, of that summer produce, I’m totally smitten with berries. We are planning out our yard right now, and I am making sure we have a spot to plant lots of berry plants. 🙂
Being smitten with berries, you can bet that I’d fall in love with this cookbook – Berries, Sweet & Savory Recipes by Eliza Cross. If this cookbook doesn’t make you want to run to the Farmer’s Market, I don’t know what would!
First of all, while I definitely love a good berry dessert, (this Strawberries and Cream Skillet Cobbler is a current favorite), this cookbook takes is a step further and includes both sweet and savory recipes. And you all know how I feel about that sweet and savory combination!
Here are the details:
Number of Photos: many – there isn’t a photo for every recipe. There is probably a photo for every 2 to 3 recipes. But the photos that are included definitely make you want to get in the kitchen to make the recipes. They are beautifully done!
Difficulty Level of Recipes: easy to medium – most of the recipes would be easy for a beginner, but there area few that might be a little more intimidating.
Availability of Ingredients: easy – as long as you aren’t trying to buy your fruit out of season. The ingredients are all pretty basic and should be easy to find.

I know I say it every time, but I really did have a hard time choosing which recipe I wanted to make from this book. I kept going back to this Crown Ruby Fruit Salad, and almost passed it over because I thought it was too simple.
But…
You guys – this fruit salad is amazing.
I actually had this on my calendar for 2 weeks from now, but after making it, I knew I had to get it to you all asap. Especially since Memorial Day is right around the corner. But really – I know I’m going to be making this salad all summer long. It only takes a few minutes to put together, and the flavors go together just perfectly. And the good thing is if your fruit isn’t super sweet, the lime simple syrup sweetens it right up. The mint also brings a freshness that can’t be beat.
So bring on the summer – especially all the summer berries! (And this Crown Ruby Fruit Salad over and over and over again!)

Crown Ruby Fruit Salad

Description
Simplicity is the secret behind this Crown Ruby Fruit Salad. Watermelon, strawberries and raspberries and combined with mint and a simple lime syrup for a fruit salad you’ll be eating all summer long!
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons water
- 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 teaspoon lime zest
- 3 cups cubed watermelon (cut into 1/2-inch cubes)
- 1 pound fresh strawberries, quartered
- 1 (6-ounce) package fresh raspberries
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, water, lime juice and lime zest. Bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat, stirring often. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature, uncovered.
In a large bowl, combine the watermelon, strawberries, raspberries and mint. Pour the lime syrup over the top and gently stir to combine. Serve immediately.
