Short on time? This Skillet Pasta with Sausage is made in one pan and is ready in no time at all.
I am in a working relationship with Green Giant, and this post has been sponsored. I’m so glad to be able to work with companies and organizations that I truly believe in. Thank you for supporting them, too.
As I was making dinner last night, I just kept thinking to myself just how much I enjoy cooking. I’m pretty lucky that I get to cook for a living, doing what I love to do every day. And the majority of the time, that time in the kitchen is my favorite part of the day.
But there are definitely days when I just don’t want to cook. Days when the kids are crazy (oh wait – that’s every day!) or days when we have been out all day and are exhausted. And honestly – sometimes I just want to take a day off.
For those days, I like to have a few favorite recipes that come together in a snap and that take only a few ingredients. Recipes that I know my family will eat. Last week, I shared our favorite mac and cheese, and today, I’m back with another family favorite that I decided to add a little something special to.
Watch how to make Skillet Pasta with Sausage
Skillet Pasta with Sausage. My family actually loves this dish. And I love it because not only do they eat it, but it’s made in one pan, which means less clean up for me. Winner!!
Luckily, it’s super easy to jazz up into something incredible. With the help of Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers!! This time around, I chose the Green Giant Garden Vegetable Medley, but really, there are so many varieties of the Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers that would work well in this dish.
How to make Skillet Pasta with Sausage
This dinner idea is so super simple. I use smoked sausage to make it fast, since it’s already fully cooked. And yeah, I love the way it tastes! Â All you do it brown it up, add in the veggies, some liquid and the pasta, and then cook it all together. Â My family loves penne pasta, bur I really think any short cut pasta would work well. Â You’ll need to cover the pan that it cooks in, so if your pan doesn’t have a lid, you can just use a baking sheet as a lid.
Once all the liquid is absorbed, it forms just enough of a sauce to cling to the noodles and add lots of flavor. Â The Green Giant vegetables add a whole new layer of flavors. Â And I don’t know who loved this skillet pasta more – my kids or my husband. Â There wasn’t a noodle left when dinner time was over!

The whole family enjoyed this recipe. It was fast to prepare it.

I know I’m late to this party, but I had ingredients, went looking for a recipe, found this – and made it! It’s VERY forgiving, and can be easily modified. For example, Kielbasa often comes in 12-13oz sizes, and frozen veggies vary in size too; you can also use almost any pasta. In addition to these variations, I ALSO added 3/4 cup of gouda, and 1/3 cup jarred spaghetti sauce to give it a slightly sweet/tangy flavor and a very light orange color. It came out perfect. Not every recipe can be tweaked this easily, so even though it tasted great, I’d recommend this also because it’s sorta difficult to screw up. Thanks!

Was looking for a quick and easy dinner for Mom and myself. Loved this one. We added a bell pepper (in the fridge and needed to be used) and a small can of mushrooms. It was a hit! Thanks!!
Jean says
This was so easy but so tasty. I used bow tie pasta and frozen carrots and peas for veggies!
Kelly Fisher says
It was awesome! Definitely will make this again! So easy and so flavorful. Thanks!
Aj says
My family loved this recipe even though I didn’t use smoke sausage, I used turkey and it was delicious. Next time I’ll try smoked sausage to see if it tastes better.
Tara says
Have I mentioned I’ve made this recipe like ten thousand times since I found it like 4 or 5 years ago? Making it again tonight! Thank you for a keeper!
Joel Foss says
This is the second time I’ve made this recipe; love the simplicity. You should tell people to turn the heat down from medium-high When they cover the dish to simmer. Both times I’ve made this the pan has overheated and poured broth over the stove- I’m a slow learner!
Brad Tjapkes says
This was very good! I did not have chicken broth on the shelf so I diluted a can of cream of chicken with 2 cups water. Did the rest as written.
Robyn says
Good recipe, but I did need to tweek You need about 12 to 14 oz of pasta, not 8 oz or you have to much sauce. Don’t follow her suggestion of cooking uncovered to evaporate the sauce or you will end up with mushy pasta. I also added dash o garlic powder and left out the Parmesan because of allergies.
Tammy says
I used a can of peas instead of frozen veggies. Instead of the smoked sausage, I used breakfast sausage since that’s what I had. It was delicious!!
Ni says
This was an easy and very tasty dish. Will maje again. Thank you.
Melissa says
My daughter made this for carbs before big meet! Family loves it! Not to heavy just righ
Elizabeth says
This recipe was easy to make and taste great.
Cynthia Opperman says
Great recipe to feed a load of people. So tasty! We served it with garlic bread and fresh fruit. Yum!
Meredith says
Really yummy and easy to put together at the last minute! I used my gluten free pasta with frozen asparagus because that’s all I had on hand. I also added some minced garlic with the sausage and onion and threw in some monterey jack cheese at the end to make it really cheesy. I was craving some comfort food tonight with a winter storm rolling in and this hit the spot. Will definitely make it again. Thanks!
Deborah says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and your substitutions sound delicious!
Helen says
I made this sausage pasta last night and it was very delicious! I grilled the sausage for 5 mins just to give it the grill taste but I also use this organic Italian chicken I bought also and it worked very well with your recipe. I will definitely make this again, going to try the banana cake next! Thank you and God bless
Deborah says
I’m so glad you liked it, and I hope you were able to try the banana cake as well!
DIANE LUYENDYK says
When the noodles were done and I had extra liquid I just took 1/2 the excess out and mixed it with flour. It thickened it up a bit. Don’t avoid because it seems too simple! It really is yummy! Thank you!
Deborah says
I’m glad you enjoyed it!!
Golfershun says
We loved it. Used kielbasa. Because it is the end of summer I used fresh broccoli, grape tomatoes and asparagus. Hubby does not eat cheese or garlic so I left out. I gave him the hot pepper and he said definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing,.
Deborah says
I love your veggie substitutions! So glad it was a keeper for you!
Tanya says
I love this dish. I make it all the time. My husband recently switched his diet to low carb. Last night I used frozen zucchini pasta and it was still delicious. Just needs less liquid.
Deborah says
What a great substitution, so glad that you both love it!
Sue says
Thanks! I’m going to make this tonight. Sounds yummy, fast and easy. I think I’ll change the veggies to asparagus on the side and add some sliced mushrooms since my granddaughter is kinda picky with her veggies.

This recipe was a smash in my house! No leftovers . . . Hubby & the Girl loved it. Easy peasy . . . Loved it!
Deborah says
Yay! So glad it was well loved. 🙂
Nathan Shalduha says
The FWB fire department loves your recipe! Of course we had to quadruple the batch which meant 3 skillets sauteing onions and sausage then we combine everything in a large pot to finish it off. A little different technique but to feed this many guys we had to change it up.
Deborah says
Love this!!
Kristin says
Question. When you cover the skillet to cook the pasta, should the heat still be on medium high?
Deborah says
You’ll want to keep it at a boil to cook the pasta, so you’ll keep the heat up. I like to lift the lid a few times and stir the pasta and adjust the heat as needed.
Abby says
If I am using fresh veggies instead of frozen, when would you recommend I add them in? (mushrooms and asparagus)
Deb A says
For whatever reason I seem to always have broth and sausage on hand, I made this, this evening, for I was looking for a creamy pasta, and this was perfect cause I had the cheese that I need to use up, didn’t have green giants frozen veggies but I had some that also needed to be used up, just about to pop some biscuits in the oven to top it off, I am totally loving the one skillet method. I thought at first I was going to have the same problem others were talking about, too much broth, I just took lid off stirred a couple of times then lowered the heat, it turned out creamy good, This is now pinned to my board… Thanks.
Deborah says
I’m so glad you loved it – we make it all the time!!
Jessica R says
I was hesitant to make this because I am not a sausage fan. But my husband is. This was fantastic! Easy to make and it made a lot, which is good with an infant. I used elbow macaroni because I forgot to get the penne and it was still great. Definitely a keeper!
yeimi says
What do you recommend if i dont have chicken broth or i don’t want to use it?
Deborah says
Any broth would work. Technically, you could probably use water, but you’d miss out on a lot of flavor.
Val says
I do not usually post to these but I had to let you know this was a very good recipe, I used what I had on hand and it came out soooooo delicious!! And it was all in the same pan so no extra dirty pans 🙂 I tired this recipe with some tweaks, I used bowtie pasta and vegetable broth. The veggies I used were a can of French cut green beans, left over corn and a can of black beans (rinsed).
I cooked the onions and sausage then added the broth and pasta and cooked this till there were 5 minutes left then I added the vegetables and beans b/c they were canned. I let this finish cooking and both my husband, daughter and I thought this tasted amazing. Thank you for this post I will definitely make this again, I like that it is tweak-able!!
Elizabeth says
Thanks for posting this idea and saving dinner!
Angela says
I made this tonight and it was great definitely a keeper.
Jacqui says
I made this last night, but I used Chicken breast instead of sausage. I also used whole grain pasta.
I cooked the chicken first and set aside, and then I followed the instructions. The only thing next time, I would use a 1/2 cup less of broth and still use the 1/2 cup of milk. It was just too much broth and I had to take out a 1/2 cup of the liquid.
It was really delicious and my husband told me I could make this for him anytime…as much as I wanted to!
Thank you for creating this easy, yet delicious meal!
Danielle says
Great recipe,
I changed it slightly.

Newlywed here… My husband shot a deer this season & we had sausage made. I was searching for deer sausage recipes & stumbled upon this one & I’m so glad I did! It was really good & my husband loved it!! It made enough for us both to have dinner & lunch tomorrow.
Deborah says
I’m so glad you loved it!!
Donna says
Just tried this recipe out. It was alright for a quick go to.
However, I don’t think I will make again. It wasn’t as flavorful or creamy as I thought it would be.
Megan B. says
I’m having the same problem with the amount of liquid. The pasta cooked up beautifully but the liquid is almost all there. At this point, by the time the liquid cooks down the veggies and pasta will be way overcooked. I’m going to try thickening the sauce in some way. Smells great, though!
Monica Johnson says
I’m currently making this for dinner. I figured the ingredients would soak up the liquid but its been cooking for like 20 mins and its still pretty liquidy. Is it supposed to be like that?
Deborah says
The pasta absorbs most of the liquid. It will have a bit of a “sauce”, but most should be absorbed. Hope it worked out for you!
Mariah says
Just made this on 1/3/15 but doubled the recipe. AMAZING! This is getting added to our monthly rotation. Thank you!
Deborah says
I’m so glad it was a hit!
Ann says
This may be a stupid question, but should you let the liquid boil before adding the pasta?
Deborah says
Ann – I don’t, I just throw it all in there!
lauren says
Thank you so much for this recipe!! I made this tonight for dinner & it was sooooo easy on my life & was a big hit! I added garlic powder and cayenne for spice. Had requests for seconds & will be great for lunch tomorrow, highly recommend!
Deborah says
I’m so glad it was a hit!!
Lindsay says
my husband and I LOVE this dish and have made it several times since finding the recipe. my only complaint is that the veggies always seem to come out kind of mushy though…your photos make them look like you somehow avoided that….any tips for keeping them a bit more crisp? maybe just add them into the process later on? Thanks!
Deborah says
Hi Linsday – I would try adding the vegetables 5-7 minutes later to see if you avoid mushy vegetables that way. They should still have plenty of time to cook if you add them a few minutes later. Glad you love the recipe!
Karen Rogers says
This was so easy and so good!
Deborah says
So glad you liked it!
stacey says
This was so simple and delicious! Had so many different flavors!
Deborah says
I’m so glad you loved it – we eat it often!!
Jocelyn says
If I want to make a pound of penne noodles instead of 8 Oz what would I change?
Deborah says
You would need to double everything. But you’d probably need to do it in 2 skillets, as with just the 8 oz, it fills a large skillet pretty full. I don’t think you’d be able to double everything in a skillet, but you might be able to use a bigger pot.
Lynne says
I made this tonight and it was really wonderful! I used turkey sausage and the pasta I had on hand. This recipe is definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing!
