This Red Velvet Cheese Ball is the ultimate dip for red velvet lovers! This sweet version of a cheese ball will have you going back for more!
I love an easy dessert! Just like this Red Velvet Cheese Ball, this Dump Cake Recipe is also made from a cake mix and done in a flash. And this Oatmeal Cake may not be made from a mix, but it’s so easy that it won’t matter!

This Red Velvet Cheese Ball is a fun, easy dessert that combines the flavors or red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting into one sweet, sharable treat. Made with red velvet cake mix, cream cheese, butter, and mini chocolate chips, it’s a no-bake dessert that is perfect for serving with cookies or graham crackers.
I love a good dessert that looks impressive but doesn’t take much work, and this one definitely fits the bill. It is perfect for so many holidays, including Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or even Halloween! It’s also perfect for any gathering where you want something a little bit different.
When the idea to make this first popped into my mine, I knew it was something I needed to try. I had seen another dessert cheese ball, but being the red velvet lover that I am, I knew I needed to try a red velvet version.
But I looked and looked and looked some more, and nowhere online could I find another red velvet cheese ball. Usually, when I come up with an idea that I can’t find anywhere online, it’s because it’s not a good idea. Believe me – I’ve tried more than one thing before that I thought was originally a brilliant, original idea – only to learn my lesson. If you can’t find something online, most of the time it’s because it doesn’t work.
But this idea, it worked – as well as I was hoping for.
I’ve made this so many times now, and every time it disappears. It’s always a hit of the party!

Ingredients:
- Cream Cheese: Use full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature, for a smooth, creamy base.
- Butter: Softened butter helps create a rich texture.
- Red Velvet Cake Mix: This provides the red velvet flavor and color. You’ll only use part of the recipe, so save the rest for another recipe.
- Powdered Sugar: This adds sweetness and gives the cheese ball a smooth texture.
- Brown Sugar: This just adds more sweetness and flavor.
- Mini Chocolate Chips: These coat the outside of the cheese ball, giving you a bit of chocolate in every bite.
- Cookies and Crackers for Serving: Vanilla wafers and graham crackers are both great choices for dipping.
Important food-safety note: Raw flour in cake mix can contain harmful bacteria. If you are concerned about this, you can heat treat the mix before using. To do this, you can microwave the cake mix to 160ºF before using.
How to Make a Red Velvet Cheese Ball
1: Beat the cream cheese and butter.
Beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Starting with room temperature ingredients helps to prevent lumps.
2: Mix in the remaining ingredients.
Add the red velvet cake mix, powdered sugar, and brown sugar. Beat this all together until it is evenly combined.
3: Shape and chill.
Transfer the mixture to plastic wrap and shape it into a ball. Wrap tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until it is firm enough to handle.
4: Add the chocolate chips.
Place the mini chocolate chips in a shallow bowl or plate. Unwrap the chilled cheese ball and gently roll it in the chocolate chips until coated.
5: Serve.
Place the cheese ball on a serving plate and surround it with vanilla wafers, graham crackers, or your choice of sweet dippers.
Tips and Tricks
- Soften the cream cheese and butter first. This helps everything to mix together smoothly.
- Chill before coating. It gets way too messy if the cheese ball isn’t chilled, and the ball won’t hold its shape.
- Use mini chocolate chips. They are easier to coat the ball and easier to eat than regular size chocolate chips.
- Make it festive. Depending on the occasion, you can use holiday sprinkles mixed in with the mini chocolate chips.
- Plan ahead. Make sure you allow enough time for chilling.

Just a quick question! How long can you keep this at room temperature before it turns to delicious goop? I was thinking of taking it to a pot luck but there won’t be a fridge avaliable. .
Deborah says
It should be good for a few hours. I wouldn’t keep it out for more than 2 or 3 hours, though.

This was delicious! My sister in law brought it to Thanksgiving. We were all a little apprehensive at first, but once we tasted it we devoured it! I’m even making it to bring to a potluck next weekend.

THANK YOU!! It’s fantastic! I brought it to work for an office holiday party and already sent 2 people the recipe because they loved it. I used Nilla wafers and Teddy Grahams for the crackers.
I wasn’t paying attention when I was making it last night, and accidentally dumped in the whole bag of cake mix. But saved the day by just doubling the recipe. Now I have an extra ball to use when we have company on New Year’s Eve! This will be one of my new staples. 🙂

This looks great, BUT…you do realize that cake mix is mostly uncooked flour, which is dangerous to eat. I’d be very wary of sharing this with anyone and them getting sick. It’s kind of like raw cookie dough…I’d eat it myself, but wouldn’t feed it to anyone else and be responsible for them getting sick.

If you have a sweet tooth, this is the perfect fix. I made this for a party and to say it was a hit is an understatement! It is requested for all events we are invited to. Maybe that’s why we get invited in the first place! I tried several different cookies and nilla wafers are the perfect compliment! This recipes makes a big ball; I made two and froze the other. It freezes perfectly!

I love Red Velvet!! It is my favorite cake so of course I had to make this!! I love it & every time I make it, it’s definitely a hit!! I only have one concern, the shelf life. Normally it’s gone fast but if I do a double batch for parties, I have left overs. Can you please give me a recommended time before I have to eat or throw it out?
Thank you!
