Every once in awhile, I’ll go back to an old recipe and completely revisit it. Like these Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches.
The original version here just had you making a monte cristo sandwich, but then grilling it in a waffle maker, using it kind of like a panini press.
Don’t get me wrong. That first sandwich was tasty. But then I started thinking – what could I to make this even better?
Turn it into an actual waffle sandwich!
These Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches are perfect fro breakfast, brunch, or dinner. They are the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Plus, they are just a fun way to change up your sandwich routine!

Ingredients
- Flour: This is for making the waffles. I use all-purpose flour.
- Baking Powder: This gives the waffles their rise and texture.
- Sugar: You could cut this out or use a smaller amount, but the sugar will help with flavor and with color on the waffles.
- Salt: I use sea salt or kosher salt.
- Milk: You will need milk for the waffles, then again for the batter. I use 2% milk.
- Oil: You can use any neutral oil. I used avocado oil, but vegetable oil works, too.
- Eggs: You will need 2 large eggs.
- Dijon Mustard: This just adds some extra flavor.
- Raspberry Jam: The jam is what really makes a Monte Cristo, in my opinion.
- Cheese: I used gruyere, but any good melting cheese will work. Swiss is another popular choice for monte cristos.
- Ham and Turkey: I like to get deli meat that has been slices really thin. You can buy pre-sliced, but the thin slice works so much better.
- Powdered Sugar: This is optional. I know it sounds weird, but the whole combination is actually really, really good!

How to Make Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches
STEP 1: Make your waffle batter. You are simply combining the dry ingredients, then the wet, then mixing them together.
STEP 2: Cook your waffles according to the waffle maker directions.
STEP 3: Make the batter that you will dip your sandwiches in. I like to use a pie plate – you just need something shallow.

STEP 4: Time to assemble! Start by spreading jam on the inside side of two waffles.
STEP 5: Add some of the cheese on, follwed by some of the ham and some of the turkey. I tear it up to make it fit a little better.
STEP 6: Sprinkle more of the cheese on top.
STEP 7: Place the other waffle on top, jam side down. Repeat with the remaining waffles and fillings.

STEP 8: Take each sandwich and dip both sides into the batter. You don’t want to fully soak it, but make sure each side gets dunked.
STEP 9: Place on a skillet with butter. Cook until the sandwiches are golden brown.

Tips and Tricks
I made my own homemade waffles for these sandwiches. If you want to make is super easy and fast, you can use frozen waffles. No judgement here!
My original waffle recipe has you separate the egg whites and yolks. I don’t do that here because I’m not as worried about super light and fluffy waffles.
These are best eaten the same day they are made. They will be ok the next day in the fridge, but they will get too soggy beyond that.
I ended up getting a waffle maker that makes multiple mini waffles at the same time. If you don’t have one of these, you can use a regular mini waffle maker. Or you can use a regular waffle maker and just make sandwiches from the squares or triangles.

Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches
Ingredients
Waffles
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups milk
- 1/4 cup neutral oil
- 2 eggs
Sandwiches
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 3/4 cup raspberry jam
- 8 oz shredded gruyere cheese
- 1/2 pound deli sliced turkey
- 1/2 pound deli sliced ham
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Powdered sugar optional
Instructions
- Preheat a mini waffle maker.*
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, (or I like to use a large liquid measuring cup to cut back on dishes), combine the milk, oil and eggs. Beat the eggs in the liquid.2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 3/4 cups milk, 1/4 cup neutral oil, 2 eggs
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and mix until combined.
- Make the waffles according to waffle maker instructions.
- Pour the milk into a shallow dish. (I like to use a pie dish.) Add the eggs and Dijon and beat to combine.1/2 cup milk, 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- Assemble the sandwiches. Place the waffles on a surface, and spread 1 tablespoon of jam on each waffle. Sprinkle some of the cheese on 6 of the waffles, on top of the jam, then layer on the turkey and the ham. Add the remaining cheese on top, then place the remaining 6 waffles on top, with the jam side down.3/4 cup raspberry jam, 8 oz shredded gruyere cheese, 1/2 pound deli sliced turkey, 1/2 pound deli sliced ham
- Heat a skillet or griddle and melt the butter. (If your skillet or griddle is too small to cook all 6 sandwiches at once, only use half of the butter.)2 tablespoons butter
- Working with one sandwich at a time, dip the sandwich in the milk and egg batter, dipping each side of the sandwich, then place in the hot pan. Let the sandwich cook until golden brown and until the cheese has melted. You may need to cover the pan with a lid or with foil so the cheese will melt before the sandwich gets too brown. Once browned on one side, carefully flip and cook on the second side.
- If you can’t grill all of the sandwiches at the same time, use the remaining butter to finish cooking the sandwiches.
- Serve the sandwiches warm, dusted with powdered sugar, if desired.Powdered sugar

Just made this for lunch – adding some jam to the sandwich – and it was fantastic! I actually do have a panini press, but switching it up and using a waffle iron was fun and yielded such a pretty sandwich =).

before I gave up meat, I used to get a monte cristo sandwich from Bennigan’s all the time (in Boston). The.Best.Sandwich.Ever. it’s that sweet salty heaven combo. I need to find a way to recreate that veg style because now you’ve DEFINITELY spurred a craving!
