Whenever we have breakfast for dinner, we often have hash browns. And for a long time they were the frozen hash brown patties.
But let’s face it – homemade is better. Even though this is really just frozen potatoes cooked a little differently.
They are crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The perfect breakfast addition!
Ingredients
- Eggs: The eggs will act as a binder to keep everything together.
- Spices: You can really get as creative with the spices as you’d like. I use garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Potatoes: You could technically use fresh potatoes, but frozen hash brown potatoes make these a cinch! You do want to thaw them first so that they will cook all the way through.
How to Make Hash Brown Waffles
STEP 1: In a large bowl, combine the whisked egg with the seasonings. Make sure everything is mixed together well.
STEP 2: Add the hash brown potatoes. Mix to combine. You’ll want to make sure the potatoes are coated with the mixture.
STEP 3: Spray your waffle maker and add about 1/4 cup of potatoes to the waffle iron. (The is for mini waffles.)
STEP 4: Close the waffle maker and cook until it is crispy on the outside, 8-10 minutes.
Tips and Tricks
I have 2 mini waffle makers that I like to use at the same time. It can get pretty time consuming if you are only doing one at a time.
You could also use a full size waffle maker, but you would want to use a standard waffle maker, not a Belgian waffle maker with deeper grooves. You could even use a multi mini waffle maker to make it even faster!
Different waffle makers will cook at different times, so you may need to test the timing with the first waffle.
These are best served hot when you make them. I keep them warm in a warmed oven, on a cooling rack to allow for air circulation.
We like these as a breakfast side dish, but they are great with an over easy egg over the top.
