Got a craving for a root beer float but need something a little slimmer? This Root Beer Float Smoothie hits the spot at just a fraction of the calories of the real deal!
There are very few things that I don’t like to eat. I’ll be sitting at a table with a group of people, and one person will sub in this, and another will have that taken off. And I’m just sitting there – bring me all the food!!
Sometimes it’s a blessing, and sometimes it’s a curse. Because really, I will eat everything.
There are only a handful of things that I don’t really care for. Well, there is only one thing I won’t eat – Corn Nuts. I don’t know what it is about them, but they make me want to lose my lunch just to smell them. But I think that is the only thing on my I-will-not-eat-it list. There are some others that aren’t my favorites, like oatmeal or cream of wheat (it’s a texture thing), or goat cheese (which is growing on me, but I’m not quite there yet.)
And believe it or not, I’m not the biggest root beer float fan. It’s funny, because I love the taste of root beer, and vanilla ice cream, and I like the flavors together. But I think it’s something about the frothiness (is that a thing??), and creamy carbonation? It’s just weird to me.
So it kind of surprised me when I thought up the idea to do a root beer float smoothie. But once you take the carbonation out of the equation, you get the flavors that I love, and a winning smoothie was born.
This smoothie portion is a lot bigger than I normally do, but even with it’s large size, if you use nonfat yogurt, you are getting a big portion for well under 150 calories. You can’t beat that if you are looking for a skinny swap when you are craving something a little more decadent.
The root beer flavor in this smoothie is not overpowering. If you want more of a root beer punch, feel free to add in more extract, but add it in slowly, because it can go from not enough to WHOA pretty quickly.
I see movie nights and Root Beer Float Smoothies happening regularly this summer!
Thank you so much for joining me this week as we kicked off the release of Best 100 Smoothies for Kids. I’m so excited to see people making these smoothies in their homes, and especially when they are made by or for the kids.

Root Beer Float Smoothie
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Total Time: 5 mins
- Yield: 4 (14 oz) servings 1x
Description
Got a craving for a root beer float but need something a little slimmer? This Root Beer Float Smoothie hits the spot at just a fraction of the calories of the real deal!
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk
- 3 cups ice
- 1 underripe frozen banana, sliced
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoons root beer extract
- agave, to taste
Instructions
- Combine the milk, ice, banana, yogurt, and both extracts in a blender. Blend until smooth. Taste, and add agave as needed.
Recipe Notes:
If you like a strong root beer flavor, add more extract. But add sparingly, because it is quite strong.
By using an underripe banana, you get the creaminess but not the banana flavor. But the less ripe your banana is, the more you will need to rely on agave to sweeten the smoothie. If your banana is ripe, you may have a stronger banana flavor, but will not need to use as much agave.
I used nonfat Greek yogurt, but nonfat or full fat will both work.
