I sometimes get excited when I see bananas getting overripe on the counter. Banana bread is always a staple, and I never get tired of it.
And as much as I love my traditional banana bread, it’s sometimes fun to change things up. And while this Buttermilk Banana Bread isn’t some crazy change, it sure is a delicious one!
This recipe uses both granulated and brown sugar, not only giving this banana bread great flavor, but great texture. And while there isn’t a lot of buttermilk, it makes this bread so moist and tender.
So next time you have some bananas that need used up, this Buttermilk Banana Bread is a great way to use them up!

Ingredients
- Flour: I use all-purpose flour in this banana bread.
- Baking Powder & Soda:
- Cinnamon: This just adds a little bit of warmth. It is not overpowering, but I love the little extra it brings in.
- Salt: This is important for balancing flavors, as well as helping with the structure of the bread.
- Butter: I like to use unsalted butter.
- Sugar: You will need both brown sugar and granulated sugar in this recipe. I use light brown sugar.
- Eggs: For best results, bring your eggs to room temperature before adding them.
- Buttermilk: This is a great recipe for if you have some leftover buttermilk, as it doesn’t call for a lot. But if you need to, you can also make your own buttermilk substitute.
- Vanilla: This is for added flavor. Use pure vanilla extract for the best flavor.
- Bananas: The more ripe your bananas are, the sweeter they will be. I don’t like them when they are totally black, but you do want bananas that are very ripe.

How to Make Buttermilk Banana Bread
STEP 1: Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Set this aside.
STEP 2: In another bowl, beat the butter with both of the sugars until it is creamy. Then beat in the eggs.

STEP 3: Add half of the dry ingredients and mix to combine.
STEP 4: The mix in the buttermilk and the vanilla.
STEP 5: Add in the rest of the dry ingredients and mix again.

STEP 6: Now add in your mashed bananas. Mix this together just until combined.
STEP 7: Pour the batter into a 1 pound loaf pan that is lined with parchment or sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake the bread until a tester inserted in the middle comes out mostly clean. This will take somewhere around an hour. Let the bread cool slightly before removing and cutting into slices.

Tips and Tricks
You want to make sure you are using a 1 pound loaf pan. The dimensions are different across different brands, so the shape of your loaf may be wider or taller, depending on the pan.
Different ovens cook differently. The bread will take around an hour to bake, but you may want to start checking it a little earlier, or you may have to bake it longer. Test it with a toothpick for doneness. I like to see a few moist crumbs on the toothpick.
Let the bread cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
I like to store the bread covered at room temperature. It will last longer in the refrigerator, though it will dry out faster.
