Whether you are throwing a Halloween costume party or watching a Halloween movie, you need snacks. And this Halloween Chex Mix is such a crowd pleaser, you’ll want to make it all the time!
I love that it is sweet and salty and addictive. It’s really got something for everyone!
And I also love that it is really easy to customize with your favorite holiday candy. Just beware – leave it out and before you know it, it will be gone!
Ingredients
- Rice Chex: I used Rice Chex, but really, you could use any Chex cereal. Or even a mix.
- Bugles: These are usually found near or on the chip aisle at the grocery store. They bring in a good salty element. And my family likes the bugles the best out of everything in this snack mix!
- Butter: I use unsalted, although salted butter would work just fine here.
- Brown Sugar: I use light brown sugar. You could use dark brown sugar if you want a deeper flavor.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice: I use my own pumpkin pie spice mix. You could use store bought, as well.
- Vanilla: This just adds another layer of flavor.
- Chocolate Covered Pretzels: I found a mix of white chocolate and milk chocolate pretzels with Halloween sprinkles. But you could just use all chocolate or all white chocolate, if desired.
- Candy Corn & Mellowcreme Pumpkins: I like to use a mix of candy corn and pumpkins. Again, you can use all of one or another, though.
- Halloween M&Ms: I used peanut M&Ms, but you could use any that you like. You could even swap them out for Reeses Pieces if you want some peanut butter.
How to Make Halloween Chex Mix
STEP 1: Mix the Chex mix and the bugles in a very large bowl. Set this aside.
STEP 2: Melt the butter in a saucepan, then add the brown sugar. Cook until the sugar melts, then turn off the heat. Stir in the pumpkin pie spice and the vanilla.
STEP 3: Immediately pour the syrup over the cereal mix and gently mix to coat everything with the syrup. Be careful, because it’s very hot.
STEP 4: Pour the cereal mix out onto 2 baking sheets. Bake these at 275ºF for about 30 minutes, stirring the mixture once or twice to make sure everything is evenly coated. Let the cereal cool.
STEP 5: Once the cereal is cool, add it to a large bowl. (I use the same bowl, but cleaned it out before using.) Add in the pretzels, candy corn, pumpkins, and M&Ms.
STEP 6: Stir everything together. Then serve!
Tips and Tricks
The syrup mixture makes just enough to lightly coat the cereal and the bugles. If you really want it fully coated, you can double the syrup mixture.
This is really just a guideline. You can add in different candy or snack items, or take out what you don’t like.
We store this just at room temperature. I don’t put it in a covered container so that the candy corn doesn’t soften and get gooey.
