I often struggle with side dishes, simply because by the time I’ve put time and effort into dinner, I don’t want to spend a lot more time or effort on a side dish.
But when the side dish is as easy as these Creamed Peas? Sign me up.
They really only take 15 minutes to make. And everyone loves them. Plus, they are perfect for holidays. These Creamed Peas are a winner!

Ingredients
- Butter: I use unsalted butter. If you use salted butter, you’ll want to cut back on the added salt slightly.
- Flour: This will help to thicken up the sauce.
- Half and Half: I found that full cream was too rich and thick but milk was not enough. Half and half is the perfect balance!
- Peas: I just use frozen peas. You don’t need to thaw or cook them first – I add them in frozen.
- Sugar: The sugar will help to bring out the sweetness. You could leave this out if desired, but I like the little bit of extra sweetness.
- Salt and Pepper: These are both for seasoning and flavor.
- Garlic Powder: This adds just a little bit of garlic flavor.
- Cream Cheese: If your cream cheese is at room temperature, it will melt into the peas easier.

How to Make Creamed Peas
STEP 1: Melt the butter in a saucepan. Then whisk in the flour. Let it cook together for a minute.
STEP 2: Whisk in the half and half. Continue to cook, whisking often, until the mixture starts to thicken.

STEP 3: Add the peas. Remember – no need to thaw them first!
STEP 4: Stir this all together until the peas are thawed completely.

STEP 5: Season the peas with the sugar, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
STEP 6: Add the cubes of cream cheese. Continue to stir until the cream cheese is melted and mixed in completely. Serve the peas warm.

Tips and Tricks
The mixture will continue to thicken as it cools. If it does get too thick, you can add in a few splashes of milk or half and half.
You can also adjust the seasonings or add additional seasoning to give them extra flavor.
You can also make these ahead of time and then reheat when it’s time to serve them. Again, you may have to add some additional liquid to thin them out a bit.
