A popular southern sauce, this Comeback Sauce is perfect for dipping fries and chicken fingers, or for topping burgers or salads. It’s tangy, delicious, and so versatile!
For another southern favorite, try this White BBQ Sauce!

I’ve lived in Utah for pretty much all of my adult life. And Utahns live and die by their fry sauce. You can pretty much find it at any restaurant that serves food that needs a dipping sauce.
But it used to be that if you left Utah and asked for fry sauce, no one would know what you are talking about.
Come to find out, though – there are a whole lot of versions of fry sauce out there, just named something else.
Like this Comeback Sauce. Created in a restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi, this sauce was served as a dipper for fried foods, or as a salad dressing. And while it is a little more complex than fry sauce, it really is very similar.
But we are in love with this sauce. It is delicious with fries and chicken tenders, but we really love it on hot dogs and hamburgers. My original recipe printed here had the comeback sauce served with pigs in a blanket. It’s super versatile, and is a delicious condiment to keep in the fridge!
Ingredients
- Mayonnaise: You want to use a good quality mayonnaise.
- Chili Sauce: The kind of chili sauce you need is a tangy tomato based sauce. I used the Heinz brand, but there are others. Some people confuse this ingredient for sriracha, and while this sauce does have a tiny bit of heat, it shouldn’t be overly spicy.
- Ketchup: This gives you even more tomato flavor.
- Lemon Juice: You want to use fresh lemon juice. I usually just add in about half of a lemon.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This will give you sauce some depth.
- Hot Sauce: I like to use tabasco or cholula, but feel free to use your favorite.
- Spices: The spices are very important for the right flavor. You need smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard, and black pepper. Some people will add in salt, but I don’t think it needs any salt.
How to Make Comeback Sauce
STEP 1: Place all of the ingredients in a bowl.
STEP 2: Mix it all together to combine. I like to use a whisk to make sure there aren’t any lumps. Then refrigerate the sauce until needed.
Tips and Tricks
I like to store this in a glass jar, or we will also put it in a squeeze bottle so it’s easy to use whenever we want it.
You can eat this right away, but it really is best it it’s had some time to sit in the refrigerator for the flavors to meld together.
If stored correctly, it should last you at least a week in the refrigerator.
