Instructions
In a small bowl, whisk together all of the sauce ingredients. Refrigerate until needed.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up as it cooks. When it is almost browned through, add the onion and continue to cook until the onion is soft.
1 1/2 pound ground beef, 1/2 cup diced onion
Add the mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet and cook for a minute.
Whisk together the beef broth and the cornstarch. Add it to the skillet and continue to cook until the meat is slightly thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper, if needed.
1/2 cup beef broth, 2 teaspoon cornstarch, Salt and pepper
To assemble, heat the oven to broil. Place the buns on a baking sheet, cut sides up. Cook under the broiler until toasted. (You can butter the buns, if desired, but it is not required.)
6 hamburger buns
Once browned, spread some of the sauce on both sides of the bun. Add the cheese to the top half, and return it to the oven, just until the cheese starts to melt.
6 slices American cheese
Add pickles, if using, to the bottom half of the bun, then scoop on some of the ground beef mixture. Top with lettuce (if using) and then the top half of the bun with the cheese.
