A look at the Keating Hotel in the the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego, California.
Located right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego is a small but unique boutique hotel. Designed by Pininfarina, the company behind Ferrari and Maserati, The Keating Hotel is anything but boring. With bold red and black throughout, this hotel is definitely one of a kind. The hotel itself is less than 10 years old, but the building dates back to 1890.
I hadn’t been to San Diego since I was probably in my early teens, and even then, I don’t think we ventured to downtown San Diego. So this was a whole new experience for me. I loved the location of The Keating Hotel – it was within walking distance of plenty restaurants, shopping, and while it wasn’t necessarily close, I even walked to the shoreline.
The Keating Hotel is a small boutique hotel, with only 35 rooms. There is definitely a modern vibe throughout the hotel. The rooms are very open and airy, with the sink and the shower both opened up to the room. There is a door to the toilet, but everything else is open wide. I wouldn’t say this hotel is kid-friendly, simply because there is very little privacy in the room. But it would definitely be perfect for an adult getaway!
The bed was extremely comfortable, and I slept very well the two nights I was there. I was a afraid that there would be a lot of noise since it is right downtown, but I wasn’t bothered by any noise in my room. There was a bit of noise in the meeting room (there is a bar right next door) but the room itself was pretty silent.
The staff at The Keating Hotel was more than friendly and willing to offer advice on where to eat or where things were located.
My trip was so busy that I didn’t even have a chance to explore the amenities of the hotel beyond the meeting room. But based on the room and the location alone, I was a big fan. If you are looking for a hotel in the heart of downtown, I would definitely recommend The Keating Hotel.
