Try brunch at South Congress Cafe in Austin, Texas for unique dishes packed with flavor.
I hope you all are prepared for Austin overload. I ate at so many amazing places, and just loved every minute of my time there, so there will be a lot of over-sharing about my trip in the next few weeks!
Earlier this week, I shared the hotel I stayed at on South Congress at the Hotel San Jose. Today, it’s all about my first meal in Austin at South Congress Cafe.
After an early morning flight into Austin, a few of us met up to grab some lunch. We decided to walk down South Congress and see what we could find. There are restaurants galore on South Congress, but we decided to go with South Congress Cafe. I was excited because it was on my list of restaurants that I wanted to visit in Austin.
South Congress Cafe only serves brunch or dinner, and since it was around lunchtime, we got to eat from their brunch menu. Now, just because there is the word cafe in the name of the restaurant doesn’t mean that this is your typical cafe. In fact, it’s pretty much anything but that. The restaurant has a modern look, and hearty dishes fill the menu. I seriously had a hard time choosing what to order because everything sounded so amazing.
There were 5 of us eating, and although I only tried my own dish, everyone raved about their food. In fact, I think we all almost cleared out plates!! I ordered the Smoked Brisket Hash with my eggs sunny side up – this dish is in the running for one of the best things that I ate in Austin. The brisket was melt in your mouth tender, and it has fingerling potatoes instead of your typical cubed potatoes. Everything about it – I’m wanting to go back to Austin for it right now!! The chips and salsa was actually pretty great, too. A great selection of salsas and a variety of house-made chips.
The only regret I have is that we didn’t order the famous Carrot Cake French Toast. We talked about ordering it for “dessert” after we ate, but by the time we were finished, we were all so full that we couldn’t do it. I wanted to go back later in the week but never made it. But it’s on the list for the next time I find myself in Austin!!
Although we hit the restaurant at a good time, South Congress Cafe can get quite busy, so be prepared for a wait if you are going on a weekend. But I think it would be worth the wait!
