Eats and Sights – Durango, Colorado

Durango, Colorado | www.tasteandtellblog.com

Filled with history, Durango Colorado is a beautiful and charming mountain town. There is something for everyone, and plenty to fill your days and your nights.

I had one day to spend in Durango, and couldn’t help but to just spend the day relaxing, walking downtown, and sampling food from many of the different restaurants. I love mountain towns where the buildings have a story to tell and where the mountains tower over, setting the perfect backdrop.

There are plenty of trails to explore – so the kids and I headed down part of the Animas River Trail. It was within easy walking distance of downtown, and was a beautiful walk.  We watched as rafts full of people floated down the river.  While the parts of the river that go through town are class I-III rapids, if you head to the Upper Animas, there are class V rapids.

On my bucket list of things to do is to one day ride the train from Durango to Silverton. The train takes you on a ride through valleys, canyons and forests that you can only see on the train. I have heard it is one of the most beautiful rides, and I can’t wait to go back to take a ride!

THE EATS:

Of course, we have to talk food!! Boasting over 100 restaurants, there is no lack of food in Durango. Since we were there for such a short time, my goal was to just try several places. It was a great time!

Up first – Serious Texas BBQ. I’m a huge fan of BBQ joints, and we had heard really good things about Serious Texas BBQ. I’m going to be honest – I wasn’t even very hungry when we went, but I ended up eating pretty much my whole meal!! I ordered the Texas Taco, which was chopped bbq, cheesy potatoes, onions and jalapenos on a flour tortilla. It was delicious!

Serious Texas BBQ does have 5 locations through Colorado and New Mexico. I can see why they are so popular!

Durango, Colorado Eats - Durango Bagel | www.tasteandtellblog.com

In the morning as I was out walking with the kids, we came to Durango Bagel. Since my kids are bagel addicts, we decided to order one and split it. We had the cinnamon sugar bagel with raspberry schmear, and it was pretty much a perfect bagel. There was too much cream cheese on it for me (just a personal preference), but I absolutely loved the bagel.

Kind of near our hotel, I noticed this crepe truck, and knew that we had to stop to get a crepe. After our day of exploring, it was the perfect opportunity to stop for a snack.

They have plenty of both sweet and savory options. They were actually quite busy, and the wait was a little long, but it’s always worth waiting when there is a crepe involved, right?

And last, but certainly not least, is Fired Up Pizzaria. We had a large group, but they have a wonderful covered patio in the back that was perfect for us. The pizza was outstanding. I ordered the Presto Pesto Pizza, which had pesto, artichokes, mushrooms and fresh tomatoes. Other popular choices were the Vesuvius (with roasted red bell peppers, pepperoni, mozzarella and Parmesan) and the Margherita. It was great pizza!!

Stay tuned for a Cowboy dinner, and amazingly beautiful drive, and a fun time in a mine!

We ate in the Diamond Belle Saloon and the food was great. I had lamb soup; something I had never had before and the costumes and atmosphere were both reaally cute. Loved Durango. Bought a charm for my bracelet there that says Durango.
