No trip to Durango, Colorado, is complete without a visit to the Bar D Chuckwagon.
I have been going to Bar D for as long as I can remember, but it had been quite a few years since my last visit. While we were planning our trip to Colorado, Bar D was one of the top things on our list!!
Just imagine – a chuckwagon dinner, under the stars, while you are entertained by singing cowboys. I was so excited to have my kids experience it!
There is actually quite a bit to do on the ranch before dinner and before the show starts. Unfortunately, it was a rainy day the day we were there, which meant not a lot of exploring for us. They have a train for the kids that goes around the ranch (which was closed because of the rain :(), a small playground for the kids, shopping in the gift store, leather shop or blacksmith shop, and there is even a chapel for weddings!
When it’s close to dinnertime, you all head in to sit at your tables. Normally, it’s under the trees and the stars, but there is a cover that goes over in case of rainy weather (which we had). At 7:30, the dinner bell rings, and they will usher you from your tables to get your food.
When you buy your ticket, you have the choice of chicken or beef, or if you get there early enough, you can order a rib eye steak. Every meal is served with a baked potato, oven baked beans, a biscuit, applesauce and spice cake. You also have the choice of fresh lemonade or coffee. Once everyone has gone through the line, they will let people continue to go back until all of the food is gone. You definitely don’t go away hungry!
After dinner, it’s time for the show, which is definitely the highlight of the evening. There are 4 wranglers, who are all very talented and entertaining. I’m not sure if the songs they sing change from show to show or year to year, but there were many familiar songs as well as songs that I hadn’t heard before. I laughed so hard at times, and was touched by others.
At the end of the program, the owner came out and sang a medley of patriotic songs with the wranglers – it was touching and beautifully done!
And of course, once the show is over, you have to go over to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Growing up, this was my first experience with their fabulous chocolates, and I can’t leave Bar D without picking one or two up!!
Bar D is open nightly from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.
Make sure you plan an evening at Bar D when you are in or near Durango. You won’t be disappointed!
