I am finally down to the last post on our trip to Southern Colorado. There was just so much that I wanted to share with you!! And this is another must-see attraction, especially if you have kids with you.
One of the things on our to-do list was to tour a mine. The day was rainy and cold, and we were almost afraid we would be out of luck because of the weather, but I’m glad we went through with our plans, because the mine tour was actually one of my favorite parts of the trip!
Located just outside of Silverton Colorado is the Old Hundred Gold Mine Tour. Running several times a day, the tours take you down into an actual mine. You get dressed up in jackets and hard hats (the inside of the mine is quite wet) and ride a tram 1/3 of a mile into Galena mountain. Inside, you have a tour guide that walks you through the mine and shows you actual equipment that was used, and how mining used to take place.
It was actually quite fascinating to see how everything worked, and how mining conditions actually were. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and really did a great job at gearing everything towards the kids.
There were a few hands on things – like a dynamite detonator box that the kids could push down and yell “Fire in the hole!” I think it was a highlight for all of the kids!
The guide also talked about the history of the mine itself. Which was quite interesting as well – it’s history started back in the 1800s. Despite the mountain being mined for nearly 100 years, it never was a profitable mine. Today, it is not a working mine, but just a historical site.
I always love places like this, and have always said that when you see things, and you are there to touch them and hear them and smell them – you will always learn more than through a history book. I love the way the old west comes to life when you visit places like the Old Hundred Mine!
