Seriously – Utah just has some top notch bloggers. Today we have another Utah blogger, Krista Dearden from Budget Gourmet Mom. I can’t remember how I first came across Krista’s blog, but I’m so glad I did! I can totally relate to so many of her posts because she is a mother of young children (although she has all boys – I don’t know how she does it!!). I love her cooking style, and I’m so glad to be featuring her here today!!

As a wife and the stay-at-home mom to four boys I have my hands full! When I am not making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or cleaning up the mess from them I am writing for my blog, Budget Gourmet Mom. We may eat on a budget but that doesn’t mean it can’t be gourmet food.

Where do most of your recipes come from?
I really enjoy creating my own recipes and those are what I try to share most of the time. I don’t mind sharing recipes that I have found and there are quite a few on there but playing with flavors is my creative outlet.

Buffalo Chicken Tacos with Celery Slaw

What is your favorite kind of food to make?
I absolutely love to bake. Hands down. Sometimes I think I should have just created a baking blog because of all the treats I make {and eat}!

What is your favorite recipe posted on your blog?

This is pretty tough because I have a few that are favorites for different reasons but as of late my favorite {that I crave daily} is my Triple Chocolate Hot Mess Cake. How can you resist that!?

Will you show us your kitchen? What is your favorite thing about your kitchen?

Welcome to my kitchen. I absolutely love my island. You didn’t know I owned my own island, did you!? This is a requirement for every future kitchen I may have.

What is your best tip for getting dinner on the table?
I’m juggling everyone’s schedules and my own so having a plan is essential. I make up a weekly menu and always have dinners in my freezer. I’m definitely not perfect so there are still nights when I’m scrambling.

What kinds of meals do you store in your freezer?
I always have homemade meatballs and when I make sloppy joes or chili I make a double batch so I can freeze some for later. It is kind of like my safety net for days when cooking just ain’t gonna happen.

Artichoke Dip Pasta

Any suggestions or hints to have great food photos?
I am not an expert on food photography by any means but I have found that natural light is the best. I also use a white poster board to bounce light off onto my food. Also, try to add splashes of color and “energy” into the photo by using pieces of fabric, fresh herbs, crumbs, and utensils.

What is your best tip for saving money on groceries?
I’m feeding a family of 6 so saving money on my groceries is a big deal. I coupon and that paired up with grocery sales saves us a ton. When something is on sale I buy more than one so I have one for my pantry. You don’t have to clip coupons or subscribe to the newspaper to save. Most of the coupons I use come from websites like coupons.com and redplum.com.

Lemon Sour Cream Drop Cookies

What is your best tip to becoming a successful blogger?
I don’t think there is a recipe for success. How’s that for a non-answer? Every blog is personal. I think what makes a blog or blogger successful is staying true to whatever that “thing” is and loving what you do. A friend told me once that you work the blog around your life, not life around your blog. I’m paraphrasing but you get the idea.
