Cheesy Garlic Bread
Filed under Side Dish - BreadJul 28
Has anyone ever heard of a watermelon allergy? I don’t know if my husband has developed an allergy, or if I just bought a few bad watermelons. A few weeks ago, I cut up a watermelon to go along with our breakfast. Both my husband and I ate some, but a few hours later, my husband said that his stomach was hurting. We went to church, and as we were sitting there, he said that he was going to run home to take something for it. A few minutes later, I got a call – he had gotten sick and couldn’t keep anything down. (There’s really no nice or polite way to say that he was throwing up, is there?!?) He was sick for a few days. Poor guy, his birthday was the next day, but he was still not feeling well at all and spent the day between the couch and the bathroom. Not thinking that it could be tied to anything we ate – because I didn’t get sick at all – the next weekend we cut up a new watermelon. We were supposed to go to a family dinner that night, but sure enough, after eating that watermelon, my husband started to throw up again. I still didn’t feel sick at all, so now I’m wondering if he has developed an allergy to watermelon. We threw all of the watermelon away, not wanting to take any chances, and he has been ok since then. I did buy both of the watermelons at the same store, so I don’t know what is wrong.

What does this have to do with this cheesy bread? Well, like I mentioned, we were supposed to go to my parent’s house for a family dinner, but my husband ended up getting sick, so we decided to stay home. My mom was making lasagna, and my contribution to the meal was going to be this Cheesy Garlic Bread. Instead, my husband and I got stuck with enough of this bread to feed 12 adults and a bunch of kids. Luckily, I hadn’t assembled the bread yet, so we’ve been able to make some here and there to eat. And I have to admit that we’ve had just this bread for a few dinners now!My husband isn’t a big bread eater. In fact, if we are out to eat, you can usually just stick the bread basket in front of me, because I could eat the whole thing while my husband will usually pass on it. But he loved this bread, and definitely ate his fair share of it. That says a lot! It is supposedly a knock off from the cheesy bread they serve at Black Angus. I’ve never been to Black Angus before, so I can’t compare them, but I do know I’m a fan of this bread!
Cheesy Garlic Bread
slightly adapted from Robbie’s Recipe Collection2 cups shredded cheese – I used an Italian blend
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup butter – softened
2-3 cloves garlic – peeled, minced fine
1 loaf French bread – cut in half lengthwise
1 bunch green onions – root and green ends trimmed, choppedIn a bowl, stir together cheeses, mayonnaise, butter, and garlic until thoroughly mixed.
Spread prepared mixture evenly over the cut side of each bread loaf half. Sprinkle onions evenly over cheese mixture.
Place bread, spread side up, on a cookie sheet or aluminum foil, and then bake in a 350 degree oven for 7 minutes. Turn oven setting to broil and broil for 3 minutes.
Break or slice bread into serving-size pieces and serve.

Hmmm…I’ve never heard of a watermelon allergy but regardless if I were your husband, I wouldn’t be eating watermelon for a while! In the meantime, that bread looks amazing – I wouldn’t feel too bad about having to eat it all yourselves!

This looks delicious! I hope your husband is feeling better. I thought allergies were to proteins, so I wonder if there is such a thing as a watermelon allergy?

I have heard of salmonella type sickness from the rind of certain melons in the past. When you slice the part you eat could be tainted. But you didn’t get sick and you would more sensitive to it. With all thats going on with tomatoes and peppers, just exercise caution.

I’m wondering buying watermelons from a different supplier would help…could be a bad crop from one farm…

That’s so weird about your husband and the watermelon. I have a friend that developed an allergy from mango. I guess you melon-eatin’ days are over.

Hmmmmm – I don’t know about the watermelon allergy. I know that certain medications cause problems with grapefruit and citrus, but not sure about watermelon.
Either way, wish I was married to a non-bread eater. The more for me

Oh. My. Gosh. This bread looks fantastic! Better than fantastic! I neeeeed to eat this! How awful that your hubby got so ill! I’ve heard of people getting sick from various stuff on the rind, but not the flesh itself. I’m paranoid, so I wash every melon regardless of type before cutting. Poor guy.

Actually, watermelon allergies DO exist. It’s common to develop an allergy to melons (all kinds) and bananas and avocados… pretty much all at the same time. If you’re worried that he’s developed this, cut all of those out of his diet for a week and reintroduce them to see his reaction. Also, watermelons are commonly harvested using latex equipment, so if he has a latex allergy, I’d just suggest a visit to a farmers market where you’re more likely to get uncontaminated fruit. Good luck (and the bread looks AMAZING.)!

Does you husband have any other allergies? It is possible he has Oral Allergy Syndrome in which the body responds to protiens/enzymes in food the same way it responds to pollen allergens. A ragweed allergy can be associated with allergies to raw bananas, and the members of the gourd family (most melons zucchini and cucumber).

Watermelons will detox you pretty hard if you eat a lot, sort of like an apple. Maybe your husband should do a detox, which would help with allergies anyway.
