Teriyaki Chicken
There are lots of things I never considered making before, turning instead to the conveniently bottled versions. Salad dressings, mayonnaise, etc. Some of them I still buy bottled – mayonnaise – and some I make from scratch at home – salad dressings. One of these condiments that I recently tried to make from scratch was Teriyaki sauce. It was so super easy and good, it made me wonder why I didn’t think to make it from scratch earlier!! This makes a thicker sauce that the bottled sauce, so it would be good served on top of something, but I used it as a marinade. I was going to use it on some grilled kabobs, but ended up throwing it in with some chicken breasts, letting it marinade overnight, then grilling the chicken. Along with the chicken, my husband grilled some fresh pineapple, which is my favorite way to eat pineapple! We also ate the chicken with some rice, and it was a delicious, filling dinner.Teriyaki Sauce
from Recipezaar.com1/4 cup soy sauce
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (i used a couple minced garlic cloves)
5 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1-2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup cold waterMix all but cornstarch and 1/4 cup water in a saucepan and begin heating. Mix cornstarch and cold water in a cup and dissolve. Add to sauce in pan. Heat until sauce thickens to desired thickness. Add water to thin if you over-thicken it.

This is great. I prefer not to rely on bottled or ready made foods if I can help it. If I make it myself I know what’s in it.
However, it would never occur to me to make my own teriyaki sauce. Thanks for sharing this.

My family and I love Teriyaki Chicken. Thanks for the variation. I’m sure we’ll try it out very soon.
One side dish that we typically add is
grilled jalapeno peppers. Delicious! The kids can handle them since most of the spice is grilled out.

We seem to be very similar in taht there are loads of things that I do not buy ready. I just went through the list of the ingredients for the teriyaki sauce and it does seem pretty simple. I will try to make it as well – got encouraged by your post.

I haven’t had teriyaki in a while, but was scanning the bottles in Whole Foods yesterday, looking at the combos. I’m right with you on the “make your own” and have gotten into the habit of checking out the descriptions on the labels of bottles in the store to get new ideas. Yours sounds yummy. Especially in the weather we’re having. Great for the BBQ.
I’ve tagged you, so check out my Bloggarooni…=)
